The West Wing food exploration has lead us to soup. While discussing ingredients, onions came up and the teachers shared that they make us cry. Believing themselves immune, some children volunteered to cut onions for the soup. At reflection meeting the children shared their experience.

Cooper: We were crying a lot. Even after we cut the onion we were crying. My eyes are crying just holding it.
Lia: My eyes got teary. I just wanted to touch them.
Prompting Luke to ask: Why did it make you cry?
Sol: Maybe the smell of the onions makes you cry. Maybe the smell is salty (pointing to his nose), the salt makes you cry (moving his fingers up to his eyes).
Jillian: Maybe it’s because the onion has spices. Maybe the the spice connects to the air and it goes up into your eyes.
Curious if they could represent and expand on these theories, the teachers asked these children if they will revisit their ideas through drawings for a future appointment. -Teacher Amy
