“Nooooooooo!” – Crosby

In the sand area, Crosby and Mica pour sand through the structure hole, catch it on the opposite side and exclaim, “I got sand!” and then they throw the handful of sand into the cardboard box. Lola comes by and sits in the box.

Mica: No, no! It’s not ready yet!

Teacher Stefanie steps in to support a discussion and Lola moves on. The boys continue filling the box but the focus shifts to more creative ways of using the shovels and holes.

They have put the shovels into the support beams and pour the sand from the top shovel, then fill each shovel with more sand. As I’m wondering if they were anticipating flow – as in how water flows from one cup to another on a declining slope – Lola comes over and removes some shovels.

Crosby: Nooooooo!

Stefanie facilitates by first attending to Crosby who is very upset. Teacher Astrid recognizes that Lola is having a difficult time and makes suggestions.

Teacher Astrid: Lola, why don’t we sit and observe what Mica and Crosby are doing?

Lola sits in Astrid’s lap as she listens to Astrid narrate their actions. Astrid suggests ways to enter play. Lola says she doesn’t want to play that game and gives back the shovel.

Several children interrupt the game by taking shovels, sitting in the cardboard box, and the game is even disrupted by Mica and Crosby when they inadvertently drop sand into each other’s faces (and open mouths). With trips to the drinking water station, offering hands to help, and teacher support, the children learn to consider each other and take account of others perspectives while focusing on their own desires.  -Kristin
