This school year started with some exciting events and the children in the East Wing have welcomed two new siblings, Alma (Arrow’s sister) and Von (Poppy’s brother). The enthusiasm and curiosity surrounding pregnancy, birth, babies, and traditions (like the ‘photo -shoot’) around these times, are evident by the dramatic play in the House Area.
Jake and Avey council new and expecting parents, Lola, Mabel, and Coco, at a doctor’s visit.
Unstructured time for play allows the teachers to observe windows into the children’s thinking and understanding of their world. They empathize with peers and share information.
When Von was born, Poppy approached Harrison: Did you know that babies poop and pee a lot?
Harrison: Yeah, Grace poops and pees in a diaper.
These exciting additions to our community bring with them changes in identity, family roles and responsibilities, new routines, and often times, big feelings. Dramatic play becomes an outlet to process the changes to daily life with the support of a community of empathetic peers. – Jessica
