A Family Calendar

The children work all year on our
monthly calendar: writing the months, year, day and numbers.

When we asked the children what they’d like to donate to the parents at their Parent Party (The Annual Silent Auction),  they wanted to share their calendar with someone.

Jessica: “What kind of things do people put on their calendar
besides holidays?”

Lucy T.: “Hair cuts. when you have an appointment to get your hair cut.”

Owen: “Sleep overs, going on a plane, Dentist appointments.”

Jessica: “I was looking at my calendar. I was noticing it has a lot of different things written on it like New Years Day. What do you do on New Years Day?  I watch the Rose bowl parade.”

Austin- “Oh yeah! I watched that. there were dogs surfing in the parade..”

Jessica-“I saw that. We could draw that.”

Austin-“Yeah”

Jessica- “who know’s about Chinese New Year?”

Lena- “Chinese flag and Chinese clothes in red with flowers on it.”

Jackson- “Dragons”

Dex-“You make a lamp with a dragon on it. The lamp is on a stick that children run around with to help light up the dragon.”

Jessica- “Does any one know anything about Ground Hogs Day?”
Max ” I do. It is when a ground hog comes out of their hole.”

Jessica- “We need to write the months of the year.”
Devin- “I can write August that is when my Birthday is.”
Max- ” I will do March because that is my Birthday.”
The calendar has been a big part of our class room. Everyday we look
at our calendar to see what may be happening today.  The children have
been learning so much more than the days of the week and month and year. They’re learning how to pronounce the two digit days ‘ Fifteenth’ instead of Fifteen or  ‘Twenty second’ and not ‘Twenty two day’.  Interpreting special days like Halloween, Christmas, Haunaka, and Easter has been a great way to get to know about each others’ family and traditions.

Every month we look forward to working on this special donation with the children for the Silent Auction. Anticipate some competitive bidding!

“Going once, going twice!”
