The Runaway Spider is the working title for a book Ephy, Emilio, and Hayes were working on with Adriana’s intern, David. The children pulled resource books and studied spiders closely, revising their drawings and narrating a story that David wrote down while they worked. During the semester break, and before David returns for ECE 22, Adriana revisited the story asking the reflection group for input.

Adriana reads the story that ends with the spiders being inside the brick house after being chased by the wolf.
Adriana: Does anyone have anything to add to this story?
Emilio: The spiders were safe.
Jacob: Safe means you can go outside.
Adriana: How does it feel when someone is running away?
– SCARED –
Barrett: You will have to get a shooter to shoot the big bad wolf.
Charlie and Emilio offer trapping ideas
Adriana: Why is the wolf chasing spiders? How do you think the spiders feel?
Paisley: When the spiders run away the wolves chase them. The wolves are crying because they’re really nice. They’re trying to say, “I’m sorry. I’m really nice.”
Adriana: Oh, you think the wolves are trying to communicate but the spiders are running away. There are two ideas. Barrett, you think the spiders should shoot the wolf because he’s chasing them. Paisley thinks the wolves are just trying to talk to them.
The children are very interested in continuing spider stories with David when he returns in the spring. During reflection meeting, we are reflecting on the story and listening to others’ perspectives. Our next steps will be re-visiting the possibilities suggested by Paisley and Barrett with the children in order to extend and deepen the learning. – Adriana
