What do you move? What are you moving?

So often children are told to use their words and keep their hands to themselves. During our movement sessions, we offer children an opportunity to use something other than their words to speak to one another.

When we begin a new movement cycle, we begin with a discussion about how we use our bodies to express ourselves.

What do you move? How are you moving?
You move your body.

What are some of the  parts of your body you use when you move?
head   bones   arms   muscles   knees   feet   funny bones

The intention of the dialogue is to help the children focus inward on their own body and develop a sense of what it feels like to move, control and initiate from each part of the body.

Our moving begins with exploring how our hands and arms would "talk". We start to transfer the concepts of how the body would express itself loudly and softly. Speaking in a whisper can be equated with moving softly, slowly, and carefully, developing body control. Speaking loudly allows for bold, vibrant and strong movements that give an outlet, releasing energy using different body parts. This way of beginning requires silence, and generates real internal listening and focus.
