Pet visits

Children use dramatic play as an avenue to express their daily life. In the East Wing classroom, the teachers have observed the children recreating their family roles by becoming parents, siblings, and pets.  While the roles of family members appear to be understood by the children, we are noticing that there is some confusion as to what role a pet plays in the family and we’re wondering what kinds of experiences the children actually have.  To understand the children’s theories on pets, and to support the children’s interest, the teachers made a decision to further explore pets. To begin our investigation, Cindy surprised the children by bringing in a pet hamster named Coke.  Along with his story, she also shared information on how to care for and feed him. Our goal is that this will bring dialogue where children can communicate their experiences and knowledge of animals as part of a family. We are inviting children to share their pets at school via pictures or visits and sign up sheets will be posted on top of the East Wing cubbies.  If you have any questions, connect with Cindy.
