“We can deliver the mail!” -Mia

While discussing Valentine’s Day at the East Wing morning meeting, the children became excited about creating a delivery system to accomodate the cards they planned to send.

Blue, “We need to make cards.”

Beckett, “Flowers too.”

Sadie, “We really need cards.”

Mia, “ We’ll need to deliver them. We need to play Post Office.”

Dex, “We’ll play delivering Valentine’s.

Mia, “We can make a real Post Office in the Middle Court Yard. Then we can deliver the mail.”

The idea of creating a post office has come up before and the children got very excited over the possibility of making it real. The teachers made a decision to revisit this idea in smaller groups so all thoughts could be heard.

With a smaller group the children quickly began to break down their ideas of what a post office meant to them. In the first group the focus was the importance of a mailbox.  This led us to a walk in the neighborhood and an opportunity to explore photography with the children.

The second group of children wanted to explore how the function of the post office would work in our school. More specifically where will it be? This group worked on designing plans on the location of the mailbox and how the system might work.

Sadie- WW and EW door can have a mailbox. There will be a little sign that says “there is mail inside” for when you put mail inside. That way people will know. There will be an arrow that says “East Wing that way”.

Georgia-The mailbox can be on strings. We will tie them to the tree and then pull them to deliver to the Back Patio, West Wing and East Wing.

Rowena-They will be on a shelve in the hallway. You pull the knob down and the box opens.

Lucille-We can have two mailboxes in the hallway. I drew a mailbox with mail inside.
