“Messy job.” – Sadie Jade

Austin brought oranges from his home along with new tools to extract the juice.  He demonstrated to the group how to use the wooden juice reamer, the strainer, and the measuring cup. Each child had the opportunity to test the utensils.

Austin: “It’s orange juice. I do this at my house.”

Silvana: “Can you show us?”

Sadie Jade, comparing the juicers at school from previous experiences: “Messy job. Feels cold. The one we have will make more.”

Hanami: “It’s going to be cold?”  She touches the orange. “It is cold! It’s a messy job!”

Cookie: “Hair went in there” (referring to the pulp). “And juice goes in there.”

Ila: “I have this juicer at my house. Seeds and pulp go here.”

Hanami: “This orange juice taste like lemonade.”

Children learn by building on what they know and what better teacher than a peer? Scaffolding simultaneously fostering a sense of mastery in Austin and familiarizing themselves with new tools, this experience supported the children in sharing information, skills and experiences.                           -Silvana
