Taking it to the street.

It's been a couple years now that the children's concerns have been overwhelmingly about our environment, recycling, reusing and the health of the animals.  This concern, or awareness, has been given life at NSW in many ways. The children designed a recycling program and decided what signs would be most useful where in our school. You can see one of them in the adult bathroom in the office. More are on each trash can.

With a small delegation of children at the Ballona Wetlands (the original 'cup group') we learned that the signs designed by the children of NSW would best be used in the city, where the trash originates.  We were advised, that if we wanted to get permission from the city to post the children's signs, we had to show community support with our "project" (their word not ours).

So we brainstormed in our staff meeting this Tuesday and recalled that one of our sister schools had a similar interest. Patricia McGrath, owner of Blueberry, has a travelling exhibit based on her children's reaction to trash they found in Temescal Canyon and the heartwrenching poems they expressed their concern through.  We're thinking, we should connect!

This Thursday, the traveling exhibit from Blueberry is at the Women's Bay Club in Santa Monica (upstairs). Go see it and email Kris afterwards to determine when we can meet to learn together, how to best represent this whole community concern to the city and post the children's signs.

Any questions can be answered by Flora. -Kris
