Finishing his felting, Ryan wanted to turn his work into a pillow. Felix, Cookie, and Lola liked the idea and asked if they could make one too. With many children having previous experiences in hand sewing and with the Crib group almost ready for pillows and blankets, the teachers felt this was an opportune time to introduce the sewing machine. The teacher met with this small group of children and began the discussed the process of turning their felt creations into pillows. Each child took turns working with the teacher while the other children had the important job of documenting their friend’s work through photography. Our next step is to fill the pillow and sew on a button.
Felix: “This is fast.”
Cookie: “I push and the needle goes up and down.”
Ryan: “Why didn’t we use this for the cupcakes?”
Lola: “I like it with my work on the outside.” Remembering that we need to sew inside out and then turn it around.
Ryan: “We can make a mail carrier bag.” He observed a new purpose when three sides of his pillow were sewn.
