As part of the next 6 month intention (please read the wall in the East Wing near the cubbies), we will be observing Philippos – Ivana’s and Kosta’s 4 month old baby boy, every other Monday. Our lens for this observation is non-verbal communication.
“Why is he crying?” Paola asked…
Maddox: I think he sees too many different people around. That’s why he’s crying.
Miles: Maybe he wants the sucky thing.
Payton: He’s crying because he wants you to stand up.
Dash: Maybe he needs to poop.
Sergio: Maybe he is sad.
Ophelia: Maybe he is shy.
Bryce C.: We are new to him.
Interpreting cues without hope of explanation is a divergent form of thinking. It requires empathy and applied logic and patience. We’re hoping, over time, the children will develop an intuition about Philippos and take time to observe others with this kind of intensity in order to pick up cues vital to communication. We wonder: Will the children make sense of utilizing this intuitive sense?
