They spent the afternoon discovering the mechanisms and how to work the tubes, pulley, and containers together.
Filling the black cauldron with wet sand, proved to be extremely heavy to lift off the pulley system.
The others look on with little empathy.
Morgan: “Just do it.”
Felix: “You need to help me.”
Morgan: “I can’t, I’m on the other side! Just get it!”
Sam: “Oh I’ll do it. Move over Felix.”
Sam: “OH, this is too heavy, rrrrrrr.”
Morgan: “Oh, rrrrr, this is heavy.”
Felix: “Let’s work together!”
Beyond facilitating working together, we’re watching for the children’s approach to problem solving physical situations that arise: now they’re lifting wet sand in a large bowl that tilts. How will they manage dry sand that will spill out? When the catch bucket gets full from the sand poured through the pipes, how will they adjust the set up to continue to pour? Will the addition of water in the summer present new challenges?
