Dear NSW families,
While we hope that a disaster of any extreme proportion never reaches us, we realize the better informed we all are, the safer we will feel as a community.
To that end, we are asking you all to make note of the following:
1. In case of an EXTREME emergency, whereby we may not have local phone access, WE HAVE A DESIGNATED OUT OF STATE CONTACT. Alum parent Annie Lai has agreed to be this person. Should you not be able to reach us at New School West, we ask you to call (917) 825-6917 for information about the students’ well being and whereabouts. Please make note of this number but USE IT IN EXTREME EMERGENCY ONLY. Put it in your cell phones, your personal contacts, and any other designated place you deem appropriate. We will notify you immediate if this number changes for any reason.
2. Please be sure you complete and keep the contact information current on both your Major Disaster Emergency Procedure form and the yellow emergency cards. The information may have changed since their completion, so be sure to update it if needed. Once you get to know the community of NSW parents, we ask that you name at least one or two NSW families on the Major Disaster Emergency Procedure form as potential contacts in an emergency. As the school year progresses, we hope that you will make connections with other parents and feel comfortable having them pick up your child and vice-versa in an emergency.
3. In case it is necessary to evacuate the school, our official emergency site is located at Beethoven Elementary School, at 3711 Beethoven Street, LA, CA, 90066. From there, we will follow the school’s directions and proceed to the LAUSD designated site at Mark Twain Middle School which is directly behind Beethoven, at 2224 Walgrove Avenue, LA, CA, 90066. Signs will be posted on our doors telling you where we have relocated.
4. In case of a tsunami warning, if we must evacuate to higher ground, our plan is to head to the Ocean View Farms where Violet’s family has a plot. Ocean View Farms is located at 3300 S. Centinela Avenue, LA, CA, 90066 and the Taylor-Henika plot A-62 is in Phase 4. We ask that any parents in the neighborhood please assist us with this evacuation.
5. We would like any NSW families who live within walking distance of the school to let us know if you are available to assist in case of an emergency. Whether it is to lend an extra hand at the school or to assist us in an evacuation should the school become unsafe. Our emergency preparedness team will compile a list of these families.
