“I like loud drums”-Oliver

Every Wednesday afternoon, Stu, a musician who has been a part of NSW since 2006, comes and works with Sam and a small group of children to support the teachers’ exploration and investigation of the children’s emerging interest in sounds and music.  To find out more about the WW experiences with music, we asked a small group of children,

“What do you like about music?”

Rocco: Drums!

Oliver: I like Nemo music. Like from the movie.

Piper G.: I like drums.

Juliette: Dancing.

Teacher Sam: What part of music makes you want to dance?

Rocco asks Juliette: Funky music?

Juliette: I like to dance to drums.

Charlie S: I like guitar and drums.

Hannah: Singing. I like to sing while I play.

Oliver: I like loud drums.

Charlie: I don’t like loud.

Juliette: I like quiet drums.

The children really enjoy the Djimbe drum in morning and afternoon circle and it has become a part of their classroom routine and something they share together.  Their conversations led us to the idea of introducing Stu via a larger Djembe drum with the idea of exploring deeper the concepts of sound with  descriptive vocabulary such as: quiet, loud, rough, smooth, soft. As an extension of their interest in playing these sounds, we will bring in different instruments for the children to explore and continue to meet with children in small groups.
