“My nanny Liseth taught me how to make paper airplanes.” Austin.

In the Paper House, children have been interested in making paper airplanes. Austin heard this and brought in some samples of airplanes that he had made with Liseth, his nanny.

With the intention to support relationships and create community, we invited Liseth to come in and demonstrate how to make paper airplanes.  The children were excited and learned the steps right away but when it was time to make one on their own, they had forgotten what to do.

Micah: “Oh yeah, I know what you are talking about.” Recalling the experience when Yoli read the instructions Liseth had left.

Laurel, recognizing the value of having the instructions and wanting to preserve them: “I know, let’s make a book about how to make paper airplanes and that way we won’t forget.”

The children who shared in this experience began to scaffold the other children, in learning the steps of airplane making.

Ryan, explained the instructions in terms he felt everyone could relate to: “You have to fold the ends and bring them to the middle like a superhero cape.”

The teachers and children plan on meeting to make this book. They will determine which photos will best represent which step, what order the steps will go in to convey the instructions, and where to keep the book.                         -Yoli
