West Wing Back-To-School Night

REFLECTIONS:

Margaret (August)

I think getting requested for an appointment is just as exciting as getting to choose a space–even if at the moment it wasn’t what they wanted to do.  One morning Amy requested my son to do painting, and she said that he didn’t want to.  But later when I came to get him, he was so excited about all of the colors they mixed, and what they were able to create during that time with Amy. There is a very special feeling that comes with being chosen for an appointment (like going for a walk in the neighborhood) and he always talks about those days when he gets home!

[responding to Roleen asking how it felt to be assigned to a space]

I was a little bummed to get the building space because I have two boys so we are building all the time. I was really hoping for the atelier with all the lights and shadows but I went to the building space and had an amazing time. And then Flora flipped a switch and there were lights and shadows there too.

I am really pleased with the structure that’s happening here (and is not always obvious to an outside observer). I can use it at home and tell my son, “Silvana would not approve.”

As parents, I think we’re so hungry for the details we are not exposed to [about what our children do at school all day]. It’s really nice to get the tidbits we only get from being here and talking to the teachers.

Thank you to you [Roleen] and all the teachers. It’s amazing at every event how much thought and love and intentionality goes into everything here.

Thank you for inviting us to these parent nights and for changing our perspectives. Every day you create environments to inspire and shift our children’s perspectives, and every time we come to a parent night, it’s a whole new awakening of perspective for us, on what our children are experiencing and learning.  Coming together as parents in this way allows us to understand our children’s experiences together, which forms and informs this wonderful community.  It is so important!
