“I was sick and my mom took care of me.” -Juliette

Juliette observed India and Roen engaged in dramatic play in the building space for their afternoon appointment. The ‘animal game’ offered Juliette an opening to connect herself to the duo who often play exclusively together.

India: Let’s take care of it.

Juliette: I was sick and my mom took care of me.

India: My mommy took care of me when I wasn’t feeling good.

Roen: Let’s all take care of the sick animals.

img_2280I am reminded that being the observer plays a big part in social negotiations. It allows time to find a place to contribute.  Often as a teacher, I step back and observe how children interact before offering support. I was taken with the trio’s skills in

connecting.  Roen and India were receptive to Juliette joining their focus because they recognized that she understood the play and had empathy for their point of view. – Teacher Astrid
