Our Book Fair!

It was another successful Mrs. Nelson’s Book Fair and once again, one of our favorite community events.  Simple and sweet.  Thanks to Jennifer (Fiona EW) and her setting up/taking down, and register crew: Trinh (Zoe and Mason EW), Heidi (Harrison EW), Emma (Everly WW), Sandra (Caitlin EW), Heather (Estelle EW), Rebecca (Wally EW), Amy (Sonia WW), Patty (Sawyer WW), Laura (Ava EW), Jordan (Dillon WW), and our teachers Flora, Adriana, Evelyn and SMC intern, David. And thanks to Jessica who supported the flow of the day and Peggy who kept the children busy having fun while people shopped.  Katherine (Grey EW) and Leah (Jake, Charlie EW, Lucy WW) headed up the Bake Sale and Tattoo parlor and made it look easy, smiling all the day.  Thanks to all of you who baked and brought such yummy food to support the sales, and a big thank you to Gabe (Luscia EW) and Barton (alumni dad to Enna and Leah) for brightening the day with such great sing along music.  Big hugs to all of you for coming, buying books, donating books, reading and singing with your children all while munching on some really delicious goodies.  We’re quite a team!  Here’s the breakdown of the day’s work.  All proceeds to go the our Library fund:

20% of Mrs Nelson’s books netted us $906.91
Bake Sale = $536
Teacher Audiobooks =  $60

NSW’s profit = $1,503.   THANKS TO YOU ALL.  XO

A reflection from our intern, David Garcia, who works with Adriana at NSW

I had the pleasure of attending New School West’s Book Fair on Saturday. I was very pleasantly surprised by NSW’s approach to conducting Book Fairs, which is primarily organized by the student’s parents and is open to public. The Book Fairs that I attended when I was in school were always very much focused on consumerism as opposed to literacy or community and because those Book Fairs were held during the weekday and during school hours, there was very little chance that parents could participate. NSW has managed to help build a beautiful supportive community and events such as these Book Fairs seem to be emblematic of that. One parent expressed how NSW has helped to foster the sense of community by maintaining relationships with alumni and their families, some who have both students who currently enrolled as well as those who are graduates. When I first arrived I could hear music and singing, which turned out to be the parents of two alumni, and they provided a pleasant musical backdrop to the book fair that made atmosphere even more relaxed and joyous. It was very eye opening to be able to witness and participate in what I feel is an ideal paradigm for Book Fairs which New School West has established.  David Garcia, SMC intern
