“Being Different is Normal” at East L.A. College

During our last professional workshop at Fullerton School District, We invited Professor Linda Wilbur, the CFES Assistant Professor from East Los Angeles College to the grand opening of “Being Different is Normal” at The Westchester Municipal Center. Linda not only came but she also invited her students and Leadership interns from East LA College to this opening. Linda and her students expressed their passion for our work and asked us to bring the “Being Different is Normal” installation to East LA College for their diversity conference: “Borders: The Walls in our Lives.” presented by Fabian Debora.

Last Saturday Cindy and Adriana presented at that all day conference focused on “Stories from the Borders” and anti-bias . Cynthia, Silvana and Astrid went to support and got inspired by the work the East LA Early Childhood Department is doing with their community. The teachers met Fabian Debora from Homeboy Industries. Fabian is doing incredible work with the community. One of his projects is “Healing Tile Wall Community”. We are all excited to continue collaborating with East LA College and support Fabian and the East LA students with their work. Fabian Debora invited us to his studio in Downtown LA .

We were all moved by the deep dedication Linda and the students have. The work of the children once again has connected us in a meaningful dialogue about diversity beyond the Westside community and is helping us reflect in our own neighborhoods.
