Camouflage, silhouettes, refraction, and reflection.

In the Atelier, a light and shadow exploration is offered by incorporating overhead projectors and multiple white materials. As with all materials, we wonder how the experiences will support the children in building relationships.  Initially, some children move to the overhead projector and begin to manipulate the materials to project on the walls. Others are intrigued by the projected images and engage with them by moving their bodies. As the children take materials from the shelves, stories unfold and relationships develop but experiences with light informs it all.

As a community, we strongly value collaboration. We understand that in order to collaborate with materials, we may need to have some intimate time with a particular medium or experience. For example, on this morning, a large group worked together exploring the light and shadow area. When it was time to transition to the sand area, Mika and Arnon paused instead of joining the group and they stepped back into the light and shadow exploration. Arnon cuddled down below the table with the flashlight while Mika took the time and space she needed to engage playfully with her shadow.

Honoring all learning styles, we recognize that some children may jump right in, some may observe, some may play along and then go back to explore more on their own.

Exploring light and shadow offers children an experience that encourages curiosity and critical thinking. Through these playful moments, the children develop theories on light and how light moves and are developing a new perspective of their own bodies in space.  Shadow play serves as a prime example of how children approach learning. They experiment with materials, like light, by interacting with their environment. Light is an abstract concept that encourages them to ask questions of its properties and discover by doing how to manipulate it. – Cindy and Kris
