Flower talk

Since it is rose season, roses have been brought in to beautify our school. The children have been inspired to represent these roses with different mediums. In the back patio water colors were set up with a vase of roses inviting the children to paint them. While painting, the children got into a conversation about flowers.

Legacy: "Roses and Marigolds are both big. Every single flower has yellow in                 the middle."

Josie:    "Not every single flower."

Legacy: "Yeah your right."

Griffin: "Daisies have yellow middles, and white pedals, but Roses have all different colors."

Josie:    "Marigolds pedals are yellow, and daisy pedals are white. Marigolds are kinda like round and Daisy pedals are like going out pointy. Roses are blooming out."

Isabelle: "At first Marigolds are Roses then they turn into flowers."

Legacy:  "First they are buds. Baby flowers are called buds."

This year the whole school has been paying closer attention to the flowers around the school and community. They children are thinking intentionally when representing flowers with materials noticing what kind of flower they are representing. Through the conversation above you can also see that they are starting to articulate the differences and similarities of the characteristics of flowers.

Reviewing the same subject repeatedly but with different mediums offers opportunities to represent detail captured in 2-D and 3-D. Interpreting these different perspectives promotes deeper investigation.
