In order to support our East Wing intention, Paola opened up a dialogue by asking the children to put themselves in Zachary’s state of mind and think about what he might be feeling as he prepares for his first day of school.
Bryce K.: He might be happy because he will like the school.
Bryce C.: He might feel shy.
Phoebe: He has never been here before. He might want to stay close to his mommy. (thinking about how he would communicate shyness with body language )
Maddox: That’s what I was thinking. He’s never been here before. I don’t know who is going to bring him.
Phoebe: He might feel scared…
Sienna: …about coming.
Raven: Or nervous. He never saw this place.
Sienna: And there are so many different friends.
Bryce K.: We can tell him our names.
Maddox: And we can stay with him for a little bit. That’s one idea.
Carla: He should have a mat or we can make him something like a pillow.
Bryce K.: Maybe he likes to draw or designing. If he doesn’t have one, then he won’t be cozy.
Maddox: Do we have an extra mat for him?
These children brought this idea back to the rest of the group at the big circle after nap time. Zachary was visiting the school for his first time as we met. They noticed that he was standing close to his mommy, Jennifer and sister, Zoe.
Imonie: He might be a little afraid.
They presented Zachary with the pillow they made. We all hope this gesture will help settle Zachary into our sweet community of friends.
