“It’s like you’re going on an adventure.” – Charlie

Our Atelier is a space to work without distractions which allows focus, dialogue, and meaningful work to evolve over long periods of time. It is a place where materials and concepts are explored and used as tools for self-expression, sharing ideas, collaboration, and developing hypotheses.

During the first weeks of school, the West Wing flower groups alternated visits to the Atelier.at door

Atelierista Cindy welcomed a group at the door: We’re going to go on a tour of the Atelier. I wonder what you’ll notice.

Teacher Adriana: Does anyone know what a tour is?

Charlie: It’s like you’re going on an adventure.

Cindy: Yes, like an adventure. Let’s go on an adventure in the Atelier.

Inviting provocations were set up including color mixing, woodworking, paper exploration, and watercolor paints with pastels. The children toured and focused in small groups to begin to explore the possibilities. Over time, each child has had an opportunity to revisit the Atelier and engage in each material. Our goal is that through these open ended explorations, children will form an understanding of multiple material properties and develop possibilities for future uses.  -Cindy
