Klips, Klops, and Stomps

Klops, Klips, and Stomps

A sound exploration of the texture, surface, and material of shoes.

During a sound session in September 2010, a group of children noticed the many sounds a shoe could make. Stu and Teacher Paola wondered what would happen if they offered a variety of  shoes. The children observed the different textures, surfaces, and materials. They made predictions about what sound the shoe could make. Once they heard and audio recorded their sounds, they proceeded to name certain sounds of which they were especially fond.

Slipper

~Julian, Ophelia, Jackson, Bryce C.

Soft bendy – feels like a puppet. It’s a sliding sound. A slipper can not be loud. It can’t be loud. It’s not hard.

High Heels

~Lena, Nico, Ila, Hanami, Jackson, and Julian

Shiny, pretty, hard. My mommy wears these. What’s that sound? All heels make that sound. Klip-Klop Klip-Klop sounds like a door closing or a mouse stomping.

But where is the klop?

It’s the sound of mad stomping or a monster coming to get you.

This is an ongoing research of sound. We are currently revisiting the search of the Klop and the Bumpy Theory (a theory about the correlation between sound and the texture of the sole of a shoe).
