After observing the children on their first play dates, the teachers noticed an interest in real tools.  We made an intention to include them in our school day.  Recently, we received new stools that needed assembling. We invited the children to go over the blueprints and read the instructions. Next, we sorted out the pieces and began construction.

Remy: Hammer, hammer, hammer.

Teacher Cindy: We are going to use this new tool. It’s called an Allen Wrench. You twist it to help the screw go in.

Grace lifts pieces out of the box

Aiden: Look. It’s the frame.

Henry: Hammer, hammer, hammer.

Aiden: Get the wood and focus. You screw with the Allen Wrench.

Grace: tightening the last pieces with all her muscles: Urrrg.
Experiences like these reminds us of the importance of meaningful work with young children. Being active participants in support of their larger community shows children their value as individuals in a group and strengthens the development of a healthy sense of self.  -Atelierista Cindy
