“Now you try.” – Miro

When Mila returned after snack to continue working on her picture, she had a hard time squeezing

the sparkly, puffy paint from the tube.

Mila: I can’t do this.

Teacher Cynthia: Maybe Miro can support you.

Miro: You need support with it?

Miro takes the puffy paint that Mila offers wordlessly to him. He squeezes very hard and some gold paint squiggles onto the picture Mila was working on.

Mila: Let’s do all the colors!

Mila walks away while Miro continues to work with the tubes.

Teacher Cynthia: How will you know how to do it if you’re walking away? Ask him to show you.

Mila: How do you do it?

Miro: Take it and fold it and squeeze really hard. Now you try. Harder, harder.

Teacher Cynthia: Did you do it?

Mila: Yes.

Teacher Cynthia quickly assessed the levels of familiarity with a medium between two peers. With a little redirection she set the tone for community, collaboration, and resiliency. An intention of teaching is slowly unfolded in small moments all day long. – Kristin
