THE WEATHERMAN PROMISES WE CAN DO THIS NEXT SATURDAY,
MARCH 13TH!!
What the heck is a Charity Garden? And how is it different from Ocean View Farms?
It's a response to our whole school intention: How does our community impact the children, and what kind of impact can our children have on our community?
Our plot at OVF has an impact on the children and families: many parents who have visited with me, didn't know it existed. Part of our philosophy at school is to create a sense of place in the children, to give them roots that deeply secure them to their neighborhoods. This means, we take walks to our local pottery shop to know the woman who fires our clay, we know our neighbors Joe and Pi the dog and visit regulary. OVF is another destination to establish relationships within our community. The Charity Garden is the children's impact on our community.
The Charity garden will increase our donations from an annual holiday food drive-that we've done for 20 years, to a seasonal harvest and fresh food donation. We are eager to watch the impact from the children being deeply involved in the selfless act of growing food for others. We also want to invite the Venice High School children to feel a part of our community, in the hopes that they too will have a place to be seen as contributing and empathetic young adults.
So, please save the date (This Saturday 3/6 – if it doesn't rain!) and come with gloves and a sunhat to help NSW install a charity garden on the side yard of the East Wing. With the help of Pedal Patch Community and Venice High School, we will be building raised beds, loosening dirt on our Venice plot and mulching mulching mulching in two shifts.
from 9:00 to 12:00 there will be no children on site as we move lumber, hammer and saw.
from 12:00-3:00 the children will help us fill the beds and plant the seeds.
PPC is providing all the equipment and soliciting compost-we do have drivers if you have bags of dirt or home made compost you want to donate to the project.
Shift sign ups are on the door.
If you can't work with us, please sign up to drop off water, coffee, morning and midday nibbles. We need you in ANY WAY you can help.
