The List

Lola and Vincent want to work in the Front Yard but there is no space available. They decide to make a list of people who want to work in the Front Yard.

Vincent:    "Paola, can you help me?"

Paola:        "Sure, how can I help?"

Vincent:    "I need help with the numbers."

Paola:       "Which part do you want  help with? What number do

                I start with?"

Lola:        "You start with one. I'm almost done with mine.

                What comes after nine?"

Vincent:    "Ten."

Lola:        "What does it look like?"

Vincent:    "A one then a zero. How do you make a two?"

Lola:        "It's curvy at the top like a hook. Then you go

(Vincent follows instructions). Good, now make a

straight line. What does eleven look like?"

Vincent:    "A one then an another one."

This continues until their pages are full. The experience is a beautiful example of scaffolding. Vincent needed help with how to write numbers. That was Lola's expertise. Vincent's strength was in the sequence of numbers and what numbers make a double digit number.

The two then toured the classroom, looking for others to sign up on the Front Yard waitlist.
