While working together, the children have unfolded multiple ways to transform paper. While tearing papers:
Archer: That looks like Josephine’s hair.
Mila: It’s curly like Josephine’s.
Archer begins to make different facial expressions. Grace reciprocates with a facial gesture.
Mila: We can make a funny face!
Faced with a blank page and strips of paper, the children’s first attempt was hesitant. Instinctively, they reached for a pencil and applied their knowledge of paper to a platform for design. The children took turns drawing a shape for the face.
Archer pointed to the shape Grace drew: That one is bigger.
Mila: Now we can put the hair.
Teacher Silvana pulled mirrors out as an invitation to take a closer look at their facial features and expressions. The children looked closely and outlined parts of their face with their fingers.
Archer: Look, one eye is closed.
Mila: I don’t know how to make the nose.
Weaving points of view together, the children extended their creativity with a collage of ideas.
