As the children noticed that the fabric they used for the roof of the Fire Truck in the East Wing continued to go inside the truck, they decided to reflect about their problem with the class.
Rio: Well, we have a problem. The fabric we used for the roof keeps going inside.
Eloise: Yes. When we are inside the truck, the fabric goes inside the holes.
Lily: Oh, I know what we can do. We can measure the roof and do one piece of fabric.
Luke: Lily, but how about we sew the pieces together?
Lily: Oh, yes, we can sew all the small pieces together.
Theo P.: I think it will take so, so many people. Like 300.
As the children reflected, they discovered how important it is to look to each other for support. We as teachers see how this project supports children in taking many challenges, understanding other’s perspectives, and adding layers to their knowledge. The childrens’ relationships become stronger as they collaborate in this work together and the work becomes more complex. We wonder how this may translate into children being more sensitive in the process of giving constructive criticism to their close peers. -Teacher Adriana
