We have been feeding the worms the little extras that land in the compost bowl. The teachers are gathering notes on all the action happening around the worms, which seems to be centered on what they eat. The children wanted to make a worm menu and began to draw all the things that they imagine the worms like to eat.
“I am going to make broccoli because I love to eat broccoli and I remember I gave the worms a little of my broccoli,” said Mia, reasoning that the worms like what she likes.
“I like corn”, Beckett responds to the same logic. “I am going to draw corn on the cob. I see it is still in here!” said Beckett.
The teachers wonder if the children will adjust their logic when they find that some foods are not eaten as fast as others. Will they have different theories about what worms like to eat when the teacher revisits Dashiell and Beckett’s idea that worms eat leaves? Or do they?
Dashiel ran over to see what is happening and Beckett says, “Can Dashiel see what the worms like to eat?” Dashiel is digging and looking around for food. He notices some lettuce and one grape, “I found a grape! Look!”
Beckett notices that the worms have leaves in their home. “Dashiel, let’s look for leaves.” They discover a few leaves in the woodchips and bring it back to the worms.
