“What if we could add all those designs?” -Luke

The East Wing shared their ideas for the chandelier – bird/squirrel house with the West Wing. The West Wing children began to design their ideas.

Sammy: Maybe we could put the chandelier on the tree and the little houses around it and then we could put two here and that could be for squirrels and two could be for birds.

Luke: What if we could add all of those (designs) like an apartment building?
Clarke: Maybe we could make little houses and hang it on a string, punch a hole in them and hang them from the chandelier.
Luke:We could put tiny holes in each of the boxes and we could put a string through all of the boxes and it will look like that (points to the hanging, dried fruit in the WW) so it will look like an apartment building.
Cooper: We could make those boxes from the building space and one squirrel could go in each box and one bird could go in the other box.
Luke: So you mean it could be like a pattern: Like squirrel, bird, squirrel, bird, squirrel, bird?
Cooper: Yah!

Using blocks and drawings, the children described a combination of single family homes and apartments for the birds and squirrels. We can’t help but take into account what they know about the neighborhood and reflect that these children have a strong connection to the concept of community and all it’s diversity. We project this will be a significant message to share with the public at the Mar Vista Art Walk. It’s inspiring to recognize the children taking into account the different lifestyles present in their city. They may not conceive of the economic diversity they are designing for, but they are aware that all forms of houses are homes to a varied group of residents.  -Kristin
