Wine with Roleen

Parents reported back that Wine with Roleen was a wonderful, thought provoking night in good company in a beautiful environment. Jordan (Dillon, EW) was kind enough to share her notes . . .

Podcast: Raising good humans:  Dr. Aliza Pressman.  Episode:  Mindful Discipline with Dr. Shauna Shapiro

  • intention:  why am I here?  What do I want to accomplish?
  • attention: check out my body, my environment. . . (I’m stressed / shoulders tense..)
  • attitude:  What am I feeling?

Podcast: Parenting beyond discipline:  host Erin Royer

Tips from the evening:

  • start what you know
  • writing down the plan remembering that concepts at this age have to touched/tangible
  • their job is to push boundaries so they know we are there
  • referencing the plan
  • mission statement within the family / family values

Book:  Mind In the Making:  Seven Essential Skills Every Child Should Know. By Ellen Galinsky

1.    Focus / self control

2.    Perspective taking

3.    Communicating

4.    Making connections

5.    Critical thinking

6.    Taking on challenges

7.    Self-directed, engaged learning

Why did you even ask the question?

Ex: -why did you take that?

… make it relatable… Johnny’s going to want that

-their job is to keep us engaged  anyway they can and that could be in a negative way, meaning:  annoy us

-giving them the skill to pass through the feeling

-draw out what a bed time routine looks like

-re-visit Re-visit re-visit

What was the Reflection

Not teaching / modeling

The concept of “what did you do today”

Figure out a different way to ask

Tell them, here is what my day was like

Ex: of something to try,  “Did you make someone laugh today?”

Roleen,
Thank you for the lovely wine night! There is just so much to learn and unlearn. But hearing other parents’ experiences was very helpful.
We tried the “including Dylan in Elton’s bedtime plan”. It is the better plan! She does take a minute to think about this plan. So yes, it buys us time and engages her. We are trying out different visual cues or props to signal it’s still Elton’s time with Mommy and Daddy.
We are excited about your Podcasting exploration!! Fatim (Dylan, WW)

This is great, thank you for taking and sharing out your notes, Jordan. Jeff and I were very happy to open our house and share Wine Night with Roleen. A lot was brought to my attention about the developing minds of our ~4-year-old, and I even joined the library to borrow some books! Jackie (Olivia, EW)

It was great to chat about parenting challenges. I really liked the “intention/attitude” paradigm you talked about, I’m looking forward to digging more into that. I think you mentioned that one of the podcasts talked about it, so I’m going to try and track that down. Deirdre (Keaton, WW)
