Woodworking

Woodworking was introduced in the Front Yard!

Woodworking was introduced in the Front Yard last week. Thanks to Sage’s Dad, Zed (Lavender WW), we have beautiful new furniture he built that we are using to create a new center for the children to experience all aspects of woodworking. Initially, this space was to be set up with wood, screws, and screwdrivers for the children to practice these fine and gross motor skills. Before we could set this experience up, we needed help drilling holes in the wood for the screws. Sam recruited two of our the East Wing friends, Ryan and Mason, to share their expertise in drilling.

Ryan: I want to make six holes.

Mason: I want six, too! (he counts his holes). Now I have three.

Ryan: I have five holes. I need one more. Then I’ll have six.

Ryan and Mason counted all of the holes they drilled and concluded that each piece of wood had six holes. After this, they brought their work to both Wings to share at circle. They told the children that there were six holes in both pieces of wood for putting screws in with the screw driver.

They also informed their friends that they needed to wear goggles to protect their eyes. They demonstrated how to use a ‘C’ clamp to hold the wood to the table. After these introductions the children were excited to get to work at the woodworking table.

Austin: These are real tools. My daddy has real tools at home.

Sage: It’s going down. Look! It went all the way down. (referring to the screw)

The friends have spent the past two weeks working with the screw drivers. Soon hammers and nails will be introduced to the children. Woodworking is a great way for friends to work on hand eye coordination and gross and fine motor skills. Thanks, Zed, for the new beautiful wood working center!
