“You have to stand sideways.” -Libbi

Teacher Cindy and Sam facilitated a bus trip with Laura (Maude’s mom) down Venice Blvd. to the beach with the group who had been discussing a beach painting. With cameras in hand they focused on different angles in order to see the beach from the different perspectives, and on visualizing the elements they had been discussing: a girl on a towel, footprints, a boardwalk, bike path and ocean.

Quinton: I want to take pictures of the ocean while standing in the ocean.

Sy: I need to take a picture of footprints in sand.

One element of their painting is a girl sitting on her towel building a sand castle and looking at the ocean.

Cindy: How can you take a picture of the girl sitting on the towel looking at the ocean, and still see her face?

While Libbi observes Lev trying to solve this problem she offers a suggestion.

Libbi: I know. You have to stand sideways. Can I show you?

Lev handed Libbi the camera and then laid on the towel looking sideways at the ocean, illustrating her idea of the angle from which to view the girl.

After sharing an experience at our local beach and with their photography to support their discussions we plan to revisit the day and listen to how they will resolve their ideas together. -Teacher Sam                                                        October 4, 2015
