“How about we connect our ideas together?” -Matan

The children confront the challenge of creating a roof for the fire truck. As they revisited their Fire Truck Master plan, they decided to test different materials. After taking measurements, they continued to brainstorm solutions to make a roof that accommodates them inside the structure.

Evera: The roof needs to be tall.

Matan: How about we connect our ideas together? We ask for help to all friends right, Evera?

Evera: Yes!

The next day, after sharing their ideas and asking for more at reflection meeting, the children noticed a note Miles created. It says, “Please support us with the roof.”

Teddy: We need a strong foundation.

Miles: We can use tape to connect it .

Ruthie and Luke: We can go inside to test it.

Amalia: I have an idea. We can use the fabric to cover the holes of the roof.

Laz: Oh, yes, and it’s not heavy, right? I can support you, Amalia.

Van: Me too, Laz.

Laz: Of course, we can all work together.

Literacy is more than the ability to read and write; at its core, it’s a powerful tool for communicating and connecting with our peers. When the children saw Miles’ note waiting for them in the Building Space, they read his words as an invitation to collaborate on the work in progress. They began to exchange ideas. They were excited to think about the solutions for the roof. Now the children are leaving notes for each other in the Building Space to inform each other about the different parts of the fire truck they’re working on. Note writing continues to support not only the East Wing children’s work, relationships, and self-perceptions, but our collective value of nurturing community.          -Teacher Adriana
