As the Front Yard area is getting more care and love from the children, the teachers are noticing their deep interest in bugs. With this in mind, the teachers thought a worm compost bin would fill in the circle from compost to edible foods.
The children worked on this sign stating how to take care of the worms and what food to give and not to give them.
The children prepared and chopped compost for the worms before serving it to them. With these practices and experiences, the children have begun a natural dance with nature and engage organically with their environment.
Jelani: Are these the type of worms that make cocoons?
Teacher Katherine: What do you think?
Jelani: Yes, they do.
Lev: We’re chopping food for them.
Hazel: I didn’t know that worms like dirt!
Katherine: It’s actually coffee grounds.
Hazel: I don’t actually like coffee.
Lev: I like tea!
Hazel: They’re squiggly.
Ren: Yeah, they’re very squiggly.
Lev: Can I hold the worms?
Next time, we will work on how this sign will be best interpreted by the children at school. When you can’t read, what says ‘no orange peels’ to you? -Teacher Katherine
