“The birds and squirrels don’t know where their home is?” -Rio

Teacher Flora found a chandelier on the side of the road and brought it to NSW as a provocation. Working with Teachers Jessica and Amy, the children investigated it and began to dismantle it while discussing its possible uses.

The children pulled out the bulb sockets and wires. They removed the bobeches and gained an intimate knowledge of the chandelier’s main structure while musing about possibilities.

Luke: It could just be outside and a sign for “only birds” and they could perch themselves on the bars.
Olivia: We can add it to a tree.
Georgios: Maybe we can make a house. Maybe we can put it in the sky and we can feed them.
Rio: The birds and squirrels don’t know where their home is?

We hung it in the Front Yard tree to change the children’s perspective on the piece. The teachers reflected on the children’s dialogue, had the group share with the whole school, and we were left to wonder how this ‘squirrel and bird home’ will shed light on Venice Blvd about the complexity of children’s thinking. Will it engage the public at the Mar Vista Art Walk to have a new perspective of children who are three to five? Plan to join us on June 2nd, 2016 and find out.
