Birthdays
This week the Cilantro’s celebrated Jack’s 4th birthday. Happy birthday, Jack! We started our morning circle celebrating Jack with one of his favorite movement songs — The Solar System Song! What started as a pair dancing, turned into a full circle of children holding hands orbiting around Jack. It was so special to watch! After we danced, we invited all of the Cilantros to share a favorite memory that they have of Jack.

Copper – I love Jack! When he plays with me, he says yes a lot. I never want to stop playing with you, Jack.
Colette – I love to laugh with Jack. He’s my best friend.
Aminata – I love playing unicorn with Jack.
Emme – I like playing Ninja Turtles with you!
Oona – I like playing ‘going on the walk with Whiskers’ in the House Area with you, Jack.
Leo – Jack, you are my best friend. I love going to your house and playing with toys.
Wesley – I like doing tricks with you down the slide.
Cindy – It warms my heart to see how much you love dancing and how you welcome all the Cilantros to dance with you.
Silvana – I love your hugs and how you say my name.
In addition to sharing some of their favorite memories, the Cilantros all made birthday cards for Jack — and so did the Aloe Veras and the Basils. As we were reading the cards, the Happy Birthday song rang through our dividing doors. It was the Dandelions! They too surprised Jack with a group birthday card.

Jack’s parents, Michelle and Pete, sent us a recording of them reading the book, After The Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again) by Dan Santat, a children’s book about resilience and believing in yourself after a hard fall. We pulled down our projector screen on our wall by the Communication Center, and we hooked up our projector to a laptop. We dimmed the lights, moved the magnet-stick table to create an open space on the rug and invited the children for the viewing. The children loved seeing Michelle and Pete projected. Thank you both for reading us the story — and for the delicious pizza that we enjoyed at lunch as a special treat. Our hearts and tummies are full!

The children are deeply invested in the relationship between water and sky through the ocean investigation. This week they revisited their large ocean painting. Having previously worked on painting the water, this week’s lens was to consider possibilities for the sky. The group twisted, crumpled, folded, and flattened tissue papers in multiple shades of blue and laid them above the water on the surface of the canvas. The children’s thinking was in the changes and transformations the sky goes through in relationship with light.
